This is a very nice machine and I have managed to find almost all of the accessories and tooling.
I attempted to assemble the collet set up for pictures and assurance that it is all there. This seems to be OEM and is a 5C and I seem to have found everything that has to do with the Closer that inserts from the spindle end. However, I don't find the closer chuck that goes on the working end of the spindle. I'm not sure what I'm looking for. The lathes, in my past limited experience, had a hand wheel type rim with the collet held in the center. This attachment has a closer lever on the left end of the spindle, long tube that reaches almost to the inboard end of the spindle bore. This tube is threaded for the 5C collets. Nothing for the collet to be pulled into.
What should I be looking for??

Thanks,
Steve

I'm planning on purchasing this JET Vert. mill from the estate. The head is a CK 1 1/2 TM. The knee and rest of the mill is also JET and the table is in like now condition with power drive on the X and Sargon DRO. There is a Bridgeport slotter on the other end of the ram, which I am also getting.

To add this mill to my shop, I must give up my old Fray vert. mill, which also has a horizontal spindle. I'm glad to be upgrading to a new mill but will miss the horizontal spindle for some applications.

Here is my question: Can I fit a 90 degree angle drive and over arm support to this Jet set up. I have seen some generics offered in the tool catalogs but they don't specify which heads and over arms they will fit. I think I have everything else I need for cutting gears and splines.

Just a reminder, to myself: I shouldn't do anything until we finish the inventory, since Roy may have the angle drive setup waiting for me to find it. Wonders never cease while I'm working on this project (I wouldn't call it work, at all).

Steve

Steve,

The spindle on my old Rockwell was made to accept 4C collets, the draw bar pulled the collets into the spindle. Could your spindle be made for 5C collets?

Jack.

No, I looked at that possibility and the spindle bore is too large.

However: I just looked at my Traver's catalog while sipping my coffee and "Walla!" there it is. This collet setup isn't OEM, it is a Royal and the collet chuck is much smaller than I was expecting and there is a picture of it and I will watch for that.

Thanks,
Steve

BTW: you mention you have a Rockwell lathe, well I'm going to be listing a very nice Rockwell 24" hydraulic shaper soon. "Stay Tuned" to this thread.

There is not a collet chuck as such for a Royal 5C system. You should be looking for a flanged bushing with a 5C taper inside and spindle taper, typically Morse 5, on the outside.

Hi Steve,

I don't have the Rockwell any longer, sold it after I got my Grizzly 0554 14X40 lathe.

Jack.

If the Jet mill is a R-8 spindle and the spindle OD is 3.375 the BP or import angle heads will work.

Thanks, I'll check the spindle taper and OD next time I go there. (it's a 2+ hr drive each way so I'm limiting trips to twice a week).
The more I think about it, the more I'm sure I will find one amongst the stuff there.

Steve

I had never heard of one of these around a machine shop but I suppose sooner or later someone might need division in min. and sec..
I had heard there might be one in Roy's collection and sure enough I found it yesterday. It is still in it's original case. Not the complete dividing head but would be added to a Kearney & Trecker standard dividing head. Must be pretty old since K & T joined Giddings Lewis sometime ago and now G L is known under a different name (not sure what that is).

If I don't find the corresponding dividing head then I will offer this Astronomical Divider for sale, by it's self.

I expect one of these would make a nice display of old technology, just like my marine sextant.

Let me know if interested and can make a reasonable offer.

Steve
